Head Golf Professional: Mike Kenny
Mike Kenny, Head PGA Professional at Needwood Golf Course, brings over 15 years of golf instruction and facility management experience to Montgomery County Golf. In the last three years, Mike’s leadership and Superintendent Marty Eader’s impressive ability to create a quality golf course have transformed Needwood into one of the finest golfing experiences in Montgomery County.
Mike’s career path to Head Golf Professional is an impressive one. His first position was at Congressional Country Club under the tutelage of Kent Cayce. He spent three years at Congressional learning the ins and outs of the business and completing his education. From there, he worked as the First Assistant at Montgomery Country Club focusing primarily on golf shop operations. Subsequent positions include working for Nancy Maunder at Montgomery Village Golf Club for a brief time before accepting the First Assistant position at Argyle Country Club with Head Golf Professional Mike Barillo. This position allowed Mike to focus more on teaching. He was given the opportunity to instruct members and guests. His enthusiasm for the game and teaching abilities allowed him to develop a notable client base during his three years at Argyle.
Mike continued to sharpen his teaching skills while working at Olney Golf Park from 1999 to 2003. At that time, Olney Golf Park was a brand new and state of the art facility. Mike took advantage of this upward career move and concentrated his time on instruction — teaching over 500 lessons per year.
He began his career with Montgomery County Golf at Falls Road Golf Course in 2003 as an Assistant and earned his way up to First Assistant during his first year. Mike taught golf lessons to a diverse group of individuals and groups. During his tenure at Falls Road, Mike increased his teaching business from $40,000 to $90,000 in just three short years, giving over 1,000 lessons per year. Mike was nominated for the Mid-Atlantic PGA Teacher of the Year in 2005, 2006, and 2007. His impressive work at Falls Road earned him the position as Head Golf Professional at Needwood Golf Course in 2006.
Mike earned his degree at Montgomery College while playing on the golf team. He captained the first national championship team at Montgomery College. Mike was selected as a First Team All-American. Mike was inducted into Montgomery College’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
Mike is a native Michigander, where he learned to play and appreciate the game of golf. His Michigan roots also instilled a love of fishing. Mike is an avid freshwater fisherman who enjoys days off out on the Potomac River searching for largemouth bass. With his remaining free time, Mike plays on two softball teams.
